GIGNESTHAI ORBIS

thmnl paradise globe.jpg                                               egg1.jpg

This series is an exciting departure, to work on three dimensional pieces. Developed during 2009 and 2010, I have explored how to recreate the Antarctic images in my head onto globes and ostrich eggs. The globes are a metaphor for the world and the influence that it has on the fragile environment of Antartica and conversley Antarctica's effect on the world as a whole, especially in regards to global warming. The ostrich eggs are used as a substitute for penguins eggs and a metaphor for the fragility of the environment in Antarctica.

I have recently aquired a gorgeous emu egg that is a very dark geen with a blue tinge - watch this space!

Many peices were discarded or painted over as I came to grips with working on a 3 dimensional surface and dealing with perspective on a curved surface.

Reflection and opposites have become a theme in the works .The uniform shape of the globe and the interior and exterior surfaces of the eggs lent naturally to this development.

ANTARCTICA

In December 2006 Sue Cooke realised a long held dream and spent two weeks on the Antarctic Penninsular drawing, painting and collecting visual material. The Antarctic is a pure, pristine and perfect environment. Visually it was awe inspiring and monumental. The colours were often muted with miles and miles of blacky green oily seas contrasting with the pure white of the snow and the pure tourquoise and ultramarine that glowed from the ice. Blizzard in a Dark Landscape (exhibited March/ April 2008) was the first series of work Cooke exhibited from the trip. The series depicts the South Shetland Islands and Deception Island just north of  the Antarctic Peninsular, in a series of 18 black and white etchings.

Cooke has  completed 2 further  series of works from her trip to Antartica; Ice is a series of acrylics and watercolours that explored the forms, colours and textures, found in the ice and snow;  Gignesthai Orbis is the most recent series completed in March 2010 developing ideas dealing with the wellbeing of the planet on 3 dimensional forms. Currently Cooke is working on an installation proposal for a large scale project and a porthole series that utilizes found and recyclable materials from around the studio.
