SUE COOKE - ARTIST

Iceland...the island of Hrisey

In 2017 Cooke spent the month of June drawing at Gamli Skoli as Artist in Residence on the island of Hrisey, in North West Iceland. Hrisey is described as the Pearl of Eyjafiordur and is situated within a large fiord, of the same name.

Eyjafiodur is populated with humpback and blue whales. The island of Hrisey is reknowned for its abundance of bird life including Snipe, the Arctic Tern and the Common Eider Duck.

Cooke was attracted to the dramatic landscape, with large mountains dominating the perimeter of the Fiord and the volcanically formed landscape of Hrisey. This landscape was the subject of all her drawings whilst on the island.

Based on the principle of ley lines, the Energy Zone, on Hrisey, brings peace to visitors. Hrisey boasts the second most powerful source of energy in Iceland. Waves of love and peace flow from Kaldbakur, the highest mountain on Eyjafiordur's eastern shore.

Cooke travelled directly from Hrisey to the London Print Studio in England to take up a month long International Artist in Residence position. During the month of July, 2017, she translated a number of the Hrisey based drawings onto stones and hand printed the lithographs at the London Print Studio.
